6 April

Enjoyed the fellowship of the Easter service and lunch at the DFAC with my colleagues, and, on Monday, taught two sessions of my “Communication” class (photo attached.)  It went really well and achieved the goal of opening up some conversation.  During the second class, the female, LTC, Deputy Commander stuck her head in the room to just enjoy a moment of the discussion and laughter.  She said it’s the most she’s heard since she’s been here!  After today’s final session, CH Coggins gave me a beautiful certificate, signed by her COL/Commander, as well as a lovely carved marble box as a personal gift.

With all due humility I share the text of the certificate she wrote: For exceptional service at a critical time in the deployment of the 653d Regional Support Group to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.  Your willingness to take on an additional task during your visit to Camp Arifjan and quickly pull together a brilliant training seminar is a credit to your amazing resourcefulness and passion for the well being of Soldiers.  The seeds of good communications sown here will reap a harvest of good fruit for the Soldiers of the 653d RSG.

Conducted a final session this morning after which I completed my shopping and mailing missions- just in time!

Spent a lot of time on PT this afternoon.  The Army Physical Fitness Test consists of 3 parts- situps, pushups and a 2 mile run.  I have never enjoyed running, and the last time I tested my ankle was swollen for 3 ½ days afterward.  So, I am admitting my age, and, on the next APFT (scheduled for April- I probably won’t make it up until June!), I will do the alternate 2.5 mile walk.  However, while I had time and access to a track, I wanted to check and ensure that I could set a pace that would enable me to pass the test- I have a bit over 40 minutes.

Good news is that “New Yorker, get out of my way I’m in a hurry going somewhere” pace allowed me to finish in 35 minutes- a comfortable margin.

Most poignant moment- one of the class participants who has a 4 year old at home, as well as a Christmas day newborn, told me that he tries NOT to call home too much as it’s just too hard.

Most Kafka-esque, surreal Army moment- When they were at their Mobilization Station, CH Coggins and her assistant taught a Suicide Prevention class.  As the instructors, they did not sign the attendance roster.  You know where this is going- yes- they were required, then, to take the class!!!!

Gotta love the Army.

Don’t think I could do it full-time!

I’m off to dinner with the ladies- been avoiding packing- think I’m in denial about leaving tomorrow.  VERY excited that as a Distinguished Visitor I get to bypass the delightful Navy customs yard and subsequent lockdown, which can be many, many hours, and head right to the DV lounge at the airport, where customs will come to me!

A little embarrassed about all my souvenirs, but, oh well!
